A Walk Through Oscars Manicures of the Past

Celeb manicurist Deborah Lippmann reveals her all-time favorite nail looks.
Let's talk Oscars manicures. While I certainly don't expect anyone at the Academy Awards to walk down the carpet with furry nails, I'm 100 percent certain celebs will show up to the awards show wearing elegant, simple polish that will inspire my next mani appointment. Because they always do.
While I wait to see, I decided to reminisce on some of the best Oscars nail moments of the past — and there's no better person to do that with than celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann. In honor of the big night, Deborah revealed what she thinks are the most memorable Oscars manicures of the past. Scroll through and be prepared to bookseveral mani appointments. I have a feeling you're going to want them all.

Lupita Nyong'o in 2014

"For the Oscars, we did a really pretty, soft pink that had an iridescent shimmer called La Vie en Rose. We just thought she looked like a princess in that blue Prada," says Deborah Lippmann.

Kate Winslet in 2009

"I worked with her so many times and for so many nominations where she didn't win. The year for The Reader was when everyone just knew it was going to happen. It was just really thrilling. For her nails, it was a nude beige," she says.

Marion Cotillard, 2008

"It was actually my very first time working with her. I knew of her and had seen La Vie en Rose, but I didn't know what she liked to do, style-wise. Her gown was like a mermaid-style with fish scales, almost. That doesn't sound very glamorous, but it was stunning. We used two colors, a nude pink on the bottom and a very shimmery silver and gold, called Believe, that went on top

Reese Witherspoon, 2006

"It was a really, really wonderful day. We got her ready in her home. Most often you are in a hotel or rented home because paparazzi can get in. She was wearing a dress she had found, that she was keeping. First the nail was a nude, beige pink—not too pink, not too beige. But we ended up using Diamonds and Pearls ($18; nordstrom.com) over it. She had a lot of gold and silver shimmer in her dress, and she felt like she wanted a little extra bling at the end."

Hilary Swank, 2005

"She had already won an Oscar for Boys Don't Cry. Her body was so insane from doing Million Dollar Baby. Choosing a dress, it could've been anything. She wore that magnificent backless number. It was simple, until she turned around. So we kept the nail simple. A nude-y pink. I know, shocking."
